I really appreciated the 'Monte Walsh' movie starring Tom Selleck. I found it to be really relevant to our times, as we must today deal with changes in technology and society. Thank you for putting together such a great film. It has been over 2 weeks since I saw it, and I am still reflecting on the story, the characters, the message. Tom--I hope your next movie equals or exceeds this gem!

Love westerns. can't wait to see Monte Walsh as it is not out in Ermelo yet. Please keep those westerns rollin', as they are good family entertainment instead of all that far fetched science fiction rubish. Nothing beats a good western be it old west or modernday cowboys, with a definate line between good and bad.

Dear Mr. Selleck, first of all thank you for all your nice movies ! I think my daughter Lisa ( 9 years) is your biggest fan in Europe !! She is looking all your movies and her favourite is Quigley. We have this movie on video, and due to her passion for Mr. Quigley the video is running all the time! So meanwhile the video is nearly "dead" - but Lisa goes on watching because she knows every single word. Last Christmas she spoke with "Santa Claus" that her greatast wish woud be a ride across the Prärie with Mr. Quigley...

One of the best westerns I have seen! A great story with an exceptional cast - I taped it and have watched it 20 times and will again. I have seen many western films, my favorites with John Wayne and Clint Eastwood. Quiqley and Crossfire Trail are up near the top too, but Monte Walsh went over the top. Well done! Tom Selleck is truly exceptional at his craft. The realism that was portrayed in Monte Walsh has made me feel as if I were sitting on a porch in Antelope Junction. Aside from the main character of Monte (for which Tom did some of his best work), I also enjoyed all of the actors portraying their characters. Especially Chet and Cal - it seems these parts were written specifically for Keith [Caradine] and William [Devane]. The entire cast seemed natural in their roles. Encore! Encore!

No one can bring a western to life like Tom Selleck. Tom Selleck brought Monte Walsh's life into reality. I found the struggles in his life very realistic, very sad. Western movies keep alive that part of America that should never be forgotten. From a woman's point a view, I love cowboys and I love horses. Tom Selleck appears to have been born to keep the western alive. I never miss out of his movies. He is the best.

Dear Mr. Selleck, Thank You!!! You are a True American! I am Proud to be an NRA Benefactor menber and a Memeber of SAG (Other Peoples Money). I am so happy to see Realistic and True Quality Westerns again in this country. Have you tried to put together a good script for Quigley II? I think he is a Great Character! I Love the 1874 Sharps! I believe that the western genre is alive and well as witnessed by the recent successes of the TNT network and other films in Hollywood, notably those produced by Clint Eastwood. While there have been failures, these were often of obviously poor quality. If you make a good movie, regardless of its subject, people will watch. And in the U.S. people will watch westerns!

First of all thanks very much to Taylor Fogarty for a great series of articles! You've got a great production going here!
It is with the utmost pleasure that I post my heartfelt congrats to Tom Selleck and everyone involved in the making of Monte Walsh!!! Having been a fan of Tom's for a very long time now, I look with interest on all of his projects and offerings, and he's onto a winner with his wonderful attention to detail in this latest Western offering. I have not yet had the chance to read the book but I appreciate how he's described the way his Monte Walsh isn't just a remake of the old, but a careful blend of that and the novel. The slow pace reflects that thoughtfulness and sets a wonderful tone for what Monte was going through. Once again you've made something well worth watching again and again Tom, and it's a treat to be able to send a note that you might actually see! Anxiously awaiting the Magnum movie, (big screen, TV mini-series, WHATEVER!!!) Marie/Magwriter.

I was disappointed with Tom Selleck's "Monte Walsh". I'm a big fan of Tom's, but Lee Marvin is "Monte Walsh"! Who can forget the scene of Lee Marvin walking down main street on the cranky boards, with the theme song in the background...I still watch Lee Marvins "Monte Walsh" about twice a year. Let me say, I think Tom Selleck and Sam Elliott are the only two quality Western leads out there today. I enjoy them both. Thanks

Please continue making westerns. 'Monte Walsh', 'Crossfire Trail', 'The Cowboys', 'Sons of Katie Elder', etc. all are wonderful movies for the whole family. I like not worrying about love scenes that are too sexy for the kids to see and I'm tired of language that isn't allowed in my house being paraded across the big screen as if it should be acceptable anywhere. Please make more quality movies like westerns.

Monte Walsh another great western epic! a classic that yielded to all the dramatic senses. Tom Selleck was made to do westerns ; he fits the role to a tee. the whole cast really made this movie flow, especially with a topic that really has not been touched on before... the transition of the cowboy at the end of an era!! excellent movie, well done!! looking forward to more westerns!!

I would just like to say that Mr Selleck is the John Wayne of this era . I would also like to say I saw Monte Walsh and if any movie that I have ever seen, this movie really brings you in to the story and you almost think you have seen the era of the cowboy going by, in front of your eyes, that you have witnessed the event! Great job and I have never been so taken by any movie as I have this, you should really be proud of your work!

Greetings Tom! I enjoy all your westerns, especially the ones filmed here in Alberta. The only disappointing thing is that TNT doesn't broadcast to Canada, so us Canadian fans have to wait for 6 or more months until it comes out on video! Since your movies are filmed here, is there anyway for us to see them sooner? Keep making westerns!

Tom, Monte Walsh in my opinion was a true pleasure to enjoy. I watched it three times. Growing up in the 60's, I watched Westerns on tv and saw as many as I could in the theater. Growing up with horses, and the "cowboy way", I have a particular fondness for westerns, and support them with my attendance/viewing of new westerns, and old classic westerns alike. In my opinion, Tom, not since John Wayne have we had an actor who can be the personification of the old west such as you, thank you.

I watched "Monte Walsh" with one of Montana's last, best working cowboys and he [criticized] everything from the modern language used to the simple fact that no one got dirty, the saddle horns were wrapped with rubber which did not occur at that time. Sellecks chaps never showed wear and he wore at least 2 different pairs, and he was possibly wearing stainless steel spurs!! The list goes on...This movie doesn't come anywhere close to what "Lonesome Dove" depicted. Boo!!
Editor's Note: Hope you don't mind that in your posting the word "criticized" was inserted as a replacement for your original term of "critiqued." Reason being, a true critique of a body of work would analyze the good points as well as the bad. With that in mind we think you'll agree that the term "criticized" as it appears in your posting is properly applied in this particular case. Additionally, the text itself was condensed as we reserve the right to edit all postings for clarity and brevity.

Tom, It was a great show. I watched it three times and had to force myself not to watch it a fourth time! I really empathized with the characters. I'm 65 yrs old and grew up with the early western shows - of which there were plenty. Nowadays you can't find good quality shows like 'Monte Walsh'. It was outstanding! Enjoyed seeing George Eads also, in fact, the entire cast was wonderful. Lot of old familiar faces. They sure don't ride horses today [in other movies] like they did in the old days, where they moved like they were part of the horse. Keep 'em comin', Tom Selleck, you'll have a lot of happy viewers. Thanks again for a great show.

I read Tom Selleck's interview with Taylor on Crossfire Trail and found my own perspective expressed in his words almost verbatim. As an author of Western fiction it was a pleasure to find a kindred spirit in the film business with the sensitivities to good story and appreciation for the history. I enjoyed very much his film 'Monte Walsh' and am encouraged we may see more quality Westerns come to the big and small screen. Hopefully, the powers that be won't give in to the 'attention span challenged' demographics of the present movie going audiences as exampled recently with "American Outlaws.' Those films only undermine the word 'Western' and turn it into pulp. Congratulations on 'Monte Walsh' and here's to more and better dramas set in the 19th century American West.

Even though I don't have cable so will have to wait to see Monte Walsh on VHS or DVD when it is released, I do know that it is impossible for Tom Selleck to be in a western that is anything but outstanding. Tom Selleck sits a horse with the ease and style of a real working cowboy and wears the clothes as if he were truly born in the old west. Would love to see him make a movie out of Clair Huffaker's "The Cowboy and the Cossack," an outstanding western story. What a truly great movie it would make with Tom and Sam Elliott and the others who keep good westerns alive. Please continue to "saddle up," Tom!

Just when I thought nothing could come close to being as good as Quigley, along comes Monte Walsh. What a great story with so many well developed characters. Mr.Selleck, I noticed in Monte a little "Murray Burns" [from A Thousand Clowns on Broadway]. No wonder you were drawn to this guy. Please keep those westerns coming! I grew up watching cowboys on TV, and I guess it is still in my veins! They were my heroes. I loved 'em then and I love 'em now, but I have to wait way too long between them! I sat ready and waiting for "Crossfire Trail", and I wasn't disappointed. Tom Selleck is right up there with the best of the best. I want more of Tom and Sam and all of the great stars that breath life into the cowboy icon. I enjoyed the richness of the characters in Tom Selleck's Monte Walsh. The characters were real, vivid and had their own stories. The tale of the transition and change from era to era was fascinating and well portrayed. It could not have been conveyed as dramatically in another context. Westerns of this class are few and far between unfortunately. The last I believe would have been Unforgiven. I do hope this is released on DVD. I thought [this] Monte Walsh was ok but I don't think Tom Selleck held a candle to Lee Marvin's 1970 Monte Walsh. Yes I would like to see some new good westerns made like Conagher, the Quick & the Dead with Sam Elliott, Lonesome Dove and Quigley Down Under. I would also like very much to see the "1970, Monte Walsh" again. I can't find it anywhere.
Editor's note: The 1970s version directed by William Fraker, has become a collector's item. If you search around on the Internet you might find a few VHS copies available, but expect to pay a hefty price of anywhere between $60-$100. Fraker also happens to be featured in the 2003 Dutch documentary Go West, Young Man, a first-class cinematographic road movie that pays homage to the icons of the western film. The documentary recently had its world premier at the International Film Festival in Rotterdam. Several showings of Fraker's Monte Walsh were part of the festival's activities. Also included among those appearing in the documentary is our very own entertainment editor Taylor Fogarty, who talks about the important role that land plays in films of this genre. The U.S. premier of this documentary will be announced at a later date on this site.

We need more movies like "Monte Walsh." Westerns that captivate their audience with such authenticity that distinguishing the real from the imaginary is impossible. Allow us to feel the thunder of horse's hooves as they race for the cover of a treelined horizon, to catch that faint wisp of mountain air after a gentle rain, and give us that chance to envision the beauty of a western sunset through the "all seeing" eyes of a Cowboy.

Great show, Tom. Your best so far. I have watched Monte Walsh alot since it aired . Your portrayal of this character is tops also with just the right amount of humour and seriosness, just like us real cowboys are .You should consider making a movie in eastern Montana where I am from.
