I read ALL the letters [here in this guestbook] and have a stiff neck to prove it! The main reason I got Directv was for the Westerns channel. I'm looking forward to watching "Monte Walsh" on TNT tomorrow..and probably Sat. and Sun., too! So, come on Tom! Keep making good Westerns and we'll keep watching!

I grew up watching westerns and have taped John Wayne movies from the 1930's and have played them for my two boys 5 and 7 .Iam 50. I loved Tom Selleck on the Sacketts and have seen all of yours and I am really looking forward to seeing Monte Walsh. THe western is not dead although Hollywood has wounded it. These films in the John Wayne tradition will never die. Keep up the good work Tom Selleck! And keep speaking for us--you are one of us.

My family would love to see more westerns. My husband and I especially love Louis L'Amour stories - we live in L'Amour country and would be overjoyed to see Tom Selleck and Sam Elliott in more L'Amour novel movies. My daughter, who's two-years-old, loves westerns - every night, when we turn on the tv, she says, "cowboys and Indians, Mama!"

I grew up during a time that we had Saturday morning westerns on television. I still try to instill the western values of these shows in my 2 grandsons. They have learned to love westerns as much as I have. We need more good westerns with actors like Tom Selleck and Sam Elliott who show you not only how to be a cowboy but also what it meant to be a cowboy. Hollywood needs to revert back to these types of movies and get away from the gory, bloody gangbanging movies with the filthy music. BRING BACK QUALITY WESTERN MOVIES!!!!!!!

Please, while we have a few good actors who can even act like a cowboy or let alone even ride a horse, keep making westerns. It's a piece of American History that if protrayed right -- the way Selleck does --  everyone loves. Right now there are some very good actors and actresses. With today's technology and correct availability of props, the western movie would takea back seat to nothing.

It's time we got back to the lessons and principles that were shown in Westerns, back in the 60's even the 70's when I grew up... I think Westerns played a part in teaching good basic lessons for living that our movies now days don't.

Westerns are Americana. Rough men with good moral quality is what Ameica is all about. The city crime stuff is worthless unless it is done by Cowboys like Clint Eastwood or Schwarzenegger, again good strong moral men doing what must be done. I know that most of Hollywood is sleazy and doesn't understand but they do understand money. Do it or we will take over [making western films] down here in Dallas. Make good Westerns.

Westerns are as American as apple pie and baseball. I grew up watching westerns and my family and I still love them. Western movies have so many good attributes. They tell a story with morals, the scenery is always beautiful, and the music is very memorable. How many other movies have this all wrap up into one package? Western movies will never die. Hollywood is so bent one these computer generated films, and they cost a fortune. You don't have to spend a ton of money to reap it. It's been proven time and time again.

The "Wild West" lasted for a surprisingly few of our nation's 200 - plus years. The epic "long drives" which shaped our image of the cowboy, flowed out of Texas for a mere two decades. The heyday of the miners passed almost as quickly. So did the frontier of the leathery breed of trappers known as mountain men. Most fleeting of all was the romantic moment of the Pony Express, whose hoofbeats sounded for less than two years. Yet the remarkable era of the frontier left a lasting brand on the American character, The cowboy - black, white and Mexican - remains the pure essence of the outdoor American and his code of honor still imparts values. This period of history gave us an era so unique that no one else can claim. We need movies depicting this epic era of history, especially one's portraying actual characters and events. The American West, the American dream that helped shape our nation.

The Western is a true folk art of this country and needs to be kept alive and fresh. I'll buy Monte Walsh when it comes out on CD, just as I have all western movies that have GREAT entertainment value. I have John Wayne, Tom Selleck and others {western} movies and never get bored viewing them over and over. Simon Wincer (director), Elsa Zamparelli (costume designer) and other's like them need to make more western's, if not for educational purposes than for quality entertainment. It would be a nice change from the i.e. "real life" movies being made these days. There's not enough western's being produced in this day and age and that's sad, what with our love of the mystic cowboy. Besides "Lonesome Dove" another great movie is "Cenntennial" written by James Michener. Granted these movies my be long, but I'm taken back to the nineteenth century to live a life that has western myth.

I know from my own experience how the Western can be an extremely effective way to teach values, patriotism, respect, honor, courage, loyalty and responsibility. You already have the audience's attention because you're playing cowboys, which all of us -- deep down -- still want to do. Westerns are our American heritage, our history, and our future. John Wayne, Sam Elliott, Tom Selleck, & Roy Rogers (especially Roy Rogers) are my HEROES!!!  I MISS the good ol' fashioned western, whether on the big screen or on Television, especially the ones that are historically correct in clothing and gear. I know alot of actors don't like to get "type-cast" as a "western" actor, etc. But, these guys are SO good at it!! Westerns are an American touchstone; a North Star which will help us return to our goodness if heroes are allowed to be just that without putting their human frailties under a microscope and villians are shown to be something to be despised once again. I can't believe that "Leaving Cheyenne" by Larry McMurtry hasn't been made into a movie yet. I'm sure it would be a classic! I have watched westerns ever since I can remember and will till my sight fails me then I'll just listen to them like I did as a kid on the philco radio. I'll never forget going to the movie house and seeing "The Good,The Bad, The Ugly" for the first time. During the opening credits when Tuco leaped through the window with a turkey drumstick in one hand and a six shooter in the other I thought to myself "Whoa, this is going to be a great movie"! I truly relish every western that I can watch. If Hollywood doesn't choose to make any more westerns fine, I'll just watch reruns and they can count on getting nary a nickel from my Levi pockets. Just my two cents worth.

I have taught school for about 30 years, and our children need the kind of heros depicted in many Westerns.

Here in this state we have over 220,000 horses that have been counted on the southwestern part of the state and more in the other areas of the state. If you took that figure and multiplied it times 50 what do you think you would come up with? Folks that like horses and anything to do with horses would sell. I am 50 and have purchased Spirit and watched it twice since Christmas. My brother does not ride and watches the old westerns with me as well. I advocate more production of these films. Or perhaps the directors and producers do not know how to. A lost art. Selleck, Elliott, and some other oldtimers could pitch in and make a series. Good luck and peace to you this 2003, Adios.

I sit here this day at my computer, as many of us old ranchhands do and have this great yearning to turn back the times to those days of 4:00 AM, the brisk air that penetrated your whole being, the rustle of the horses in the distant corral, the aroma of the corral beckoning you to its contents, the creak of the saddles, the neighs, the muzzlings, the comittment, kinship, and loves these stewards of the plains have for each other and the tasks ahead. Need I say More Hollywood? I think not! Well maybe one. If you don't take on your task as we have, our children will never experience what we had on those mornings.

Soon, I'm in the process of raising the funding needed to start a documentary on cowgirls of the 20's, 30's and 40's. I hope the documentary will generate interest in a movie of one of the lives of these famous women. There's very little out there on cowgirls.

Shucks Pardners!! When the oil crunch hits horses may once again flourish. Hollywood could help the city slickers adjust better to Horse Heavan if there were more western movies now. Dreams are what makes life tolerable for many folks and Western Movies remind us all of a basic honor and pioneer spirit that's fading fast. A time when friends and family and your word were worth something. It would be nice that along with the horses, cowboys, dance-hall girls, and beautiful scienery there was a story line that grabs your heart and leaves you with a tear of triumphant joy.

Great Westerns made Hollywood and they will continue to be sucessful in each new generation. Like Jazz it is uniquely American and will always have a following here and abroad.Cowboy action shooting is the fastest growing american gun sport and one organization alone has over 48,000 members. The boomers still have a few coins to jingle in there jeans and they grew up on Westerns.

We need more quality westerns to show what the west was really like. Not all the blood and guts but a real quality story about America and pioneers.

I believe it is about time that Hollywood wakes up and listens to the folks who pay their wages, "let's try to make a wholesome movie with values and a little less blood and guts!"
