"...Hot Biscuits, a serious book with a funny (but significant) title, is every bit as revolutionary and literary as [Owen] Wister's [The Virginian]. It is the first fresh approach to the Western in memory."Dale Walker, Former director of the Texas Western University Press and author of numerous books on the West, including the recent Pacific Destiny.
TOM SELLECK's Ongoing Dedication to the Western by Taylor Fogarty
Since its inception in 1999, the online log book for our Hey, Hollywood! Make More Westerns Internet campaign has been overflowing with daily comments from our readers, many of whom acknowledge and appreciate Tom Selleck's strong dedication to the western.
I recently asked Selleck where that dedication comes from.
You know, I have no idea., says Selleck. It's selfishit's an enlightened self interest.
Selleck didn't grow up on a ranch, but for a guy who was born in Detroit and grew up in a suburb in the San Fernando Valley, he actually makes for a very convincing cowboy on film. But hes quick to point out it wasnt always that way:
You know, I just did an A&E biography and I got some home movies of me at the pony ridesand it's pretty ugly stuff. He laughs.
So when exactly did the transformation from greenhorn to top hand begin?
"When I did a western mini-series, The Sacketts. I had to learn to ride for that movie and had to learn the whole idea of playing a cowboy. I loved it. But they weren't making a lot of [westerns], so subsequently Louie [L'Amour] wrote another book for usSam [Elliott] and Jeff Osterage, myself and Ben Johnsonespecially for us to do another movie, which was The Shadow Riders. So then I was hooked.
The public showers Tom Selleck with praise in our guestbook - read it!
