Howdy, I really like your online magazine and have sent it on to western writers in my writers group.... I've been interested in westerns since I saw Roy Rogers in a movie and read my first Zane Grey novel in grammar school. Keep up the good work! Happy Trails!

It's right here at my finger tips - I don't even have to leave the house to get a copy. It's wonderful - I love tales of the old west. The imagery painted by the writers is as colorful as a full production movie. I'm from southwest Texas (near the Big Park) and am familiar with the rugged country and the life it's settlers must have led. I love the online magazine - keep up the great work!!!

I like being able to quickly look at rodeo standings, at the poetry section and the new books that have come out, and news in general. This western magazine sure helps to keep the west alive, and we who are attempting to help out through cowboy poetry and songs really appreciate that. Thanks, Tom

Your site is amazing and fun. I was raised on the Minnie-Maud Ranch along Utah's Green River. County sheriff 20 years. This is Outlaw country in the west. Nine-Mile Canyon has the largest concentrated display of Indian petroglyphs and pictographs in the world. Worth seeing. Check it out on the web under "Nine Mile Canyon". Drive north from Wellington, Utah for one hour to see it. Take water and a camera. Incidentally, the canyon is actually 27 miles long! Your friend, Barry Bryner

I find it hard to draw any comparison to Larry McMurtry's character Woodrow Call and the real Charles Goodnight. My great grandmother was Minerva Ann Goodnight. Charles Goodnight was married (twice) and had a deep and abiding affection for the cowboy's and rancher's children around the Palo Duro Canyon. He even established a school for them. Hardly anything like the gruff and may I suggest, mysogonist character of Woodrow Call. Besides, Charles Goodnight is a character in both Lonesome Dove and Dead Man's Walk and Comanche Moon. Oliver Loving's tragic incident happened not in Colorado, but more likely on the Pecos river in New Mexico. One more thing, My grandmother's name was Addie Roberts, six foot tall and closely resembles the character of the "great western", Maddie Roberts in Dead Man's Walk. Except she was definitly NOT a whore! She was however, a native Texan. I think Larry McMurtry uses old family bloodlines from Texas to slightly embellish his books. I'm not complaining at all, just wish I would have thought of it!
RESPONSE: To be fair, Linda Wommack's article did not suggest Oliver Loving's accident took place in Colorado. In fact in the paragraph of the article where she speaks about the 1867 cattle drive to New Mexico, she indeed mentions the incident took place,  "Just north of the Pecos River."
As for the comparison of Woodrow Call to Charles Goodnight, if one accepts that Oliver Loving is within the soul of the Augustus McCrae character, then could it not be that McMurtry looked to Goodnight as the mold -- separate from the character he was casting -- and simply took further literary license when developing the total character of   Capt. Call?  After all, Call's personality is part of what made the story so compelling, for embodied within the quiet reserve of his character is the tough facade of all-cowboy & every cowboy -- not so much a representation of the truly misogynistic personality.

As a child I grew up watching Gunsmoke. I thought I learned a lot of morals from the show. Our whole family watched it. Mr. Arness showed how to handle things in a proper way. He sat a good example for kids growing up. He was a roll model and so was the others like Amanda Blake. I use to try to wear my hair like she did. I hope they never stop showing this show.

As a lifelong devotee of the American West, both fact and fiction, I've found the site informative, entertaining, and at last something positive. It covers all aspects of "The West" in a lively, well presented form. Let's face it, you can't beat such a combination. I hope you go from strength to strength. Also as a published writer of Western fiction it is good to see the genre flourishing. Perhaps not as much as it did years ago, but I do sense a growing interest in Western writing and publishing, and I hope it continues. My support will always be there.

I am very interested in all types of horses. Mainly the types trained for disabled riders. One reason is I am in a Wheelchair because of a DRUNK DRIVER. I use to train horses for people most of them where B.L.M. Mustangs. those horses have gotten a bad reputation from somewhere that they do not deserve. They where the easiest horses that I have ever worked with in my life as a trainer. they are easy to gentle down if you use kindness and common sense. they can hurt you but, it's not there fault it's because you done something to them to hurt them. I really enjoyed working with the Mustangs. If I can get the revision surgery that I have to have to fix my right hip. I would like to train horses again.
Dear Tamara: We wish you the best. Someone who has such an understanding of mustangs as you do, certainly SHOULD be able to get back to training again! Let us know how things turn out for you.

I like your online western magazine very much. Here in Holland we haven't got any magazine about the West, or about cowboys. My biggest wish is to see the West in the real, but this will be always a dream for me . So when I read your magazine, it is just a little bit of that dream coming true. Thank you for that.

Hello I'm Joop from the netherlands and i love western movies, i saw the link
[to this website] on Dutch TV (GO WEST, YOUNG MAN documentary), so I came visit this site to see what I'm missing so far. Well, that is a lot! But I'm still fascinated in learning about the western style, I also like to see that Hollywood is going to make more movies also. I mean that if Young Guns and Unforgiven can make it, other western movies can make it too, so come on and surprise us.

What a GREAT site for western items. I've always been a cowgirl at heart but just (at age 60) got my own horse this Christmas. I recently remarried after being a widow and my new husband has been in the ranching business most of his adult life. I have a lot to learn about raising cows and horses but am enjoying it. It's a dream come true. I'm always on the lookout for western related items and your site is wonderful.

I been through web site after web site looking for e-cards,do you know how hard it is for a cowboy to find one he like's much less send it to the people that's use to him and his ways of life. you people have made it so easy now. what else could a man ask for, there's some of the finest poetry that I have ever read, great art, books, you name it and I bet you can find it here. I want to thank all the people that makes this happen and wish them a merry Christmas and a happy new year, and may god bless you. let's not forget all our troops that are not home and their family's.
