Hi, Candy! I've been doing some Lewis & Clark research, came across Gary Moulton, and thought of you. Are you related to Gary? Hope all is well with you and your family. Any projects underway? Expect to see Bill Graves later this month at the Pomona CA RV Rally.

Hi! I grew up on a farm near Crawford, NE, which is near the historic Fort Robinson. My family's homestead is at the bottom of Breakneck Hill road. This road is part of the Sidney-Deadwood Trail. My family's farm was homesteaded on the site where the White Clay relay station was. This is located southwest of Crawford. I remember as a child there used to be deep ruts from the wagon wheels along the existing modern road. However, back in the later 60's, the county needed to improve the road and ended up destroying much of the ruts. There still are some ruts visible further up the road on land adjacent to the road as well as further north from Breakneck Hill. My Dad says he can still see old trail ruts elsewhere on his land that run through fields and pastures that probably originally led to other farmhouses as well as the city of Chadron. I am aware of the historic flavor of this small area of the world where I grew up and even as a child had aspirations that I would some day find treasure up Breakneck Hill because of a story I heard as a child that a stage was robbed of the Army payroll and had supposedly been buried somewhere along Breakneck and was never retrieved. As children, we sometimes take things for granted and are not always interested in the entire historic significance of our surroundings. I believe as I have grown older, I find history to be so much more intriguing. I have searched the net looking for information about the Sidney-Deadwood Trail and have not been able to find any detailed account for this robbery. In fact, tourist information I have found does not even show Breakneck Hill road as being part of the Sidney-Deadwood Trial that went through Fort Robinson. Most trail guides show it as going through up through Alliance and Chardron along the existing Hwy 385. before going into South Dakota. Anyway, I found your book, Roadside History of Nebraska and, although I have not read it all yet, am impressed by the great amount of research you did on Nebraska. I like the way you summarized each region's history. I have been writing poetry since 12 years of age. I have managed more recently to get a few published in small literary magazines. Although, my passion is poetry, I have since developed an interest in trying my hand at writing stories or even books either factual or possibly fictional stories based on fact derived from my interest in old west history and characters. I am a fulltime working mother in the retail business and it is very difficult to find time for such aspirations! I certainly admire you for your accomplishments! Thank you for your time and your contribution to the literary world! Cynthia Thornton Herrera

Candy, I am also a history writer and just wanted to tell you how much I admire your work. I purchased the book Everyday Life in the Wild West and found it very helpful in my work. I will now order Roadside History of Nebraska. It sounds fascinating and since most of my research is concerned with Nebraska "bad guys," I am anxious to see what you have discovered. My favorite book store is The Book Clinic in Nebraska City. Have you ever appeared there for a signing? Best of luck with future projects. I'd love to hear more about you. Shirley Gilfert
