More quality Western shows are in order. I love the whole idea of the Western genre, which spawned modern Hollywood itself. There is nothing better than a good Western movie. Perhaps now is a good time for a production company to consider capitalizing in the box office with a solid Western.

Half the present day population grew up watching westerns-and we love them. Re-runs are great-we watch them dozens of times. It is my firm belief that the present day westerns of Sam Elliott & Tom Selleck are the saving grace of the genre. Please --- somehow ---find a way to produce more films of this excellent quality. The western is not dead---the studio braintrust is!!! Thank you for giving me a place to sound off.

Anyone born in the 60's or earlier grew up on western movies and T.V. shows. They always showed a sense of values, good over evil, beautiful scenery, great horses----need I go on? A huge part of our population is now in that age group. There is always an interest in the past and the 'old west' is one of the most colorful eras. Thank you.

The spirt of the west has been relived in westerns. There are still people who have been raised on ranches and farms who know how life really is but moral values stay the same. Respect for women folk and standing up for whats right lived in the stories of the west. We need to see some of those same themes and values on the big screen again.

I've always loved westerns,my favorites being,The Virginian, Bonanza,Larome ,Gunsmoke to name a few t.v one's.All movies with Sam Elliott, especially westerns.I feel sometimes in some of the lastest movie westerns the realism is not there, you can feel the money shots what will get the attention of the audience, but it's not realistic for the time period,it's all about the box office totals,it not what really happened. The memory of the old west will die out because the movie makers want their movie to be the most explosive, biggest name actors, biggest budget,I don't feel that counts as much as having the story told in the most realistic form as possible, and having the actors being believeable, and not having every sex scene so x rated, leave something to the imagation .And having Sam Elliott in every western that comes out might be the best Quality move any movie director could make. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.Oh,Happy Birthday Sam Elliott!!!!!!!!!

cowboying is alive and well! an honest days work for a honest days pay. it is striaght forwward, hard work: it teaches people a way of life where you have to earn what you have, to appreacate the simple things of life. it what young people need to see and understand, that everything is not fast ,a quick patch to things it honor to man, to animal and to the land. it teaches one to hang in there when the going get tough.it' s the foundation america was built on.... it is the true American way.

The western is a great vehicle sto show the nobility and the perserverence of people. There was much tradgedy and adversity jsut 120 years ago thaaa twe dont have today. It built character that we dont have today.Bring baack soome of the old tv westersn that showed clearcut good and evil.

The Western is the only truly American genre. It offers strong moral lessons and the invariable defeat of the bad guys. In the patriotic climate which follows the September 11 attacks, and which is bound to resurface as the first anniversary occurs, films and TV series that feature strong American characters standing up against great odds and hostile environments should have a built-in appeal. Additionally, the Baby Boom generation, which is now aged 38-56, is entering its most financially productive years (which should make it attractive to advertisers), and is, in many cases, seeking quality entertainment for its children. How can Hollywood afford to ignore the genre on which many of its members (myself included) literally cut their teeth? Western paperbacks continue to sell when they are given the chance at an audience: Louis L'Amour remains perpetually in print, and even old-fashioned Zane Grey turns up on the racks. Why can't Westerns in the visual form be given the opportunity to do likewise?

Haven't been to the movies in several years because of all the trash that is being passed off as "movies". Bring back the westerns!! The good guys fought for what was good and right. They didn't have much "tolerance" for horse thieves or murderers or any other type of hooligan. Didn't seem to worry about "fitting in" with the popular crowd or "political correctness". Makes you wonder what our country would be like if it had maintained the code of ethics upon which it was founded.

I'd like to see more (just one!) western films especially if made to historical facts. The life story of Roy Rogers should be done.Even a movie about Hollywood in the 30-50's about western movies! Maybe just historical places like El Paso, read "Pass of The North" Texas Western Press, this book would make a great western movie, and it's true! I'd also like to see some NEW faces in westerns. John Wesley Hardin, El Paso Gunfighter, would make a great movie. The problem I have with Hollywwod is re-writing truth into fiction to make a movie "better?" Ruined "La Bamba". Nothing is better than the truth...and movies do NOT have to have "CLOSURE"! Leave people wondering what if!.............

Westerns of the past are hard to beat. I remember going to the drive-in theater to watch Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, Sam Elliott, and the rest. The Western movies gave us some down to earth entertainment. We need more of that today. I loved the horses and the costumes of the west. I have always been a western fan, and growing up as a kid, I enjoyed such films as Stagecoach, Shane, Hondo, Rio Grande, Red River, Fort Apache, She Wore A Yellow Ribbon, Magnificent Seven, The Searchers, as well as many others. I have seen Shane, Magnificent Seven, and the Searchers many, many times. Not because they are westerns, but because of the great story the film told. The western is a film genre that continues to be used to display the struggles of our forefathers attempts to settle the west. But, at the same time, it should be a vehicle in which the true battles for the west have taken place. The true stories of the indians, the settlers, the lawman, and the outlaw, should be told, without fear of embarassing anyone. Sometimes the truth may hurt, but it is necessary to know the truth, and how it impacted the growth of the nation. Let's hope that movies, such as Dances With Wolves, can be made, and that the stories that they tell will relate the truth to the viewer.

I want to see more western movies because of their ability to teach our youth right from wrong in an interesting and exciting venue. Westerns can show violence and because of the backdrop kids KNOW they are watching fiction. The lessons we remember are the ones that we enjoy while learning. When the venue is too realistic kids sometimes miss the line between whats real and what isn't. Bring back westerns and lets teach our kids in an enjoyable way. Then maybe old codgers like me will get to see some new westerns too.

We are age 43+41 and love westerns, especially with the values of the old ones. Louis Lamour and other western writers are great too. Our 5 children and their spouses also love westerns. We enjoyed the Magnificent 7 series on TV along wioth other westerns of recent years. American outlaw was great and very watchable without a lot of the blood that seem so prevelent in movies today. Films like this are very well recieved in our area. We need more. Thanks, Julie

I can't imagine where all the westerns went. I'm a big Gunsmoke fan from way back, but have known to imbibe on 'Big Valley,' 'Bonanza,' et al. I know there's excuses like demographics and sociological dips and wanes but I can't imagine how westerns thrived on t.v. for so long and then lost out to medical and legal dramas.

Our us history as opposed to European History is short but filed with heroes and villains-all exciting. These heroes and bandidos formed our strong USA right to right wrong. Perhaps the current [generation] of writers, directors, and producers in Hollywood want to go down in history for depicting mock life as full of fanatics, psychos, and perverts. In John Ford's time the Western movie was accepted as a marketable commodity. He at least had the good sense to use many scenic Arizona backdrops--such as Monument Valley--in his films featuring John Wayne. It's about time Hollywood realized much of Arizona is still geographically the same as it was in the Old West. Sure, we have big cities like Phoenix and Tucson, but there's still the incredible natural beauty of the Grand Canyon, Oak Creek Canyon, Monument Valley, the Petrified Forest, Meteor Crater, the San Francisco Peaks, and historical towns like Tombstone, AZ, of Wyatt Earp fame, and the "ghost town" of Jerome. Old Tucson used to be a bustling movie set. Let's bring back the Western. It's still a much-needed type of movie, and I hope Hollywood sits up and takes notice.

The Western movie is the only intertainment that provides us with it all. Action, suspense, landscapes, romance, comedy, history, drama, the list is endless, so u see we need more of that because Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Rex Allen, are our hero's of the past and Sam Elliott, Tom Selleck, are our hero's of the present. It is up to the movie producers to make sure we have hero's of the future to look forward to. The past and the present hero's have been joined by our hero's of September 11, may we never forget them. God Bless them all..........Guy

Quality Westerns depict an important and romantic time of our history. Westerns such as "Tombstone", "Crossfire Trail", "Last Stand at Sabre River", "Quigley Down Under", "Conagher", "Rough Riders", and many others provide good holsom entertainment and provide an important link to our past for all people, especially our young people. Of course we don't look to Holywood for accurate hisory lessons, but our society needs good wholesome heroes to look up to.

I love westerns with Sam Elliott and Tom Selleck. You get to see the beautiful scenery and now they use period guns like the model 73 instead of model 94s when the date is 1880. the whole history of the west is so interesting, I wish I had been born then. From the horses and saddles to the gunplay, it sure beats another stupid cop or comedy movie.

We have been farmer and later big Texas Ranch Managers all our lives. We have watched the old west dissapear and now the large ranches are fewer and fewer every year. We now have a horse ranch and sell a quality horse to the public. We have seen first hand the interest in horses and the old lifestyle by people that live it and people that have to live it thru the sceen. Wish we could get people in hollywood to share this interest on the screen. Not all of America or other countries like the car chases, explosions, loud go nowhere movies. I know the people with the money for the movies are the youngsters that are sent to a movie for a babysitter. I also know if given the opportunity to see a horse movie or good country story where they could picture themselves living this lifestyle it might make an impact on their lives. Would be worth a try to show them something besides the bloody violence they are subject to on tv and movies today. Wake up America and filmmakers something is not working today. We need a kinder gentler movie but one that reaches our youngsters. If you don't think the west and ranch life isn't interesting and exciting you need to learn more about this lifestyle for sure. The stories that can be told are endless.

HOT BISUCUITS - Click here for more info!            Editor's note: We agree! But until Hollywood gets their butts in gear in making more quality Western films, you must check out the new book Max Evans (Hi-Lo Country, Rounders) and Candy Moulton have put together HOT BISCUITS - Eighteen Stories Written by Women & Men of the Ranching West.  It's been called the best thing to happen to the Western since Owen Wister's THE VIRGINIAN. What makes it unique is that all contributors to this book come from ranching backgrounds. It's one of the best books to come out in years, and is due out from University of New Mexico Press in September 2002. We HIGHLY Recommend it!

Dear Sir or Ma'am, Due to the changing nature of this country, I believe it is important that we make a gallant attempt to preserve a part of history that was so important to all of us (or should be). My husband and I ages 64 and 65 still ride and enjoy a western on TV and would enjoy more westerns at the movies. Louis Lamour has wonderful stories that could be made into movies. I was crushed when they took Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman off TV. Maybe a movie could be made from that idea. Also Little House on the Prairie is still a favorite rerun and an idea. There are many western stories about love, romance, horses, ranches, etc. Nora Roberts wrote Montana Sky, interesting love story. Anything about horses interests us. The Black Stallion movies are all time favorites, also. Thanks for your ongoing quest for more Western movies.

Quality Westerns in the past showed people of integrity, honesty. The good reached out to people in need. Those with no integrity and who were on the wrong side of the law were taken care of properly. Being bad, breaking the law did not pay. I also believe that the old quality westerns had a lot of history about this country and how the people survived during hard times. We need that back. and I think the western is the vehicle to do that.

I for one am tired of watching the same old western movies, times have changed, but the old west still has many stories to tell, and every one can learn from the stories they have to tell, our forefathers forged ahead, fighting Indians, weather, and heat, wind, snow,,and died for this country, looking for a better life, and for freedom, there are many heroes that died for this country , and I think thier stories are important and they need to be told, so come on Hollywood, lets learn from our forefathers, and thier fight for this country.and Please don't make the cowboy look stupid, they were a tough bunch of people, and need the respect of todays folks.

The settlement of the West is a part of our history and we shouldn't forget about it. The stories there are to tell of the people that settled this great land are endless. They endured great hardships and somehow managed to turn great spaces of nothingness into cities and farms and homes. These people should always be remembered and their stories should be told as truthfully as possible. This is America and what it stands for.

Everyone is on the patriotic bandwagon. What about the people that settled this wonderful country...like none other in the world? If everyone lived by the cowboy code of ethics, it would be a better world. Why not emulate this to everyone in movies instead of about weirdos? I feel relaxed after watching a western. I can't always say that after watching other types of movies. Anyone can enjoy a quality western.

It's getting to be, if ain't a Western I probably won't see it. I love the whole mystic about Westerns. The sound of spurs on a boardwalk, the wind whipping across the desert or plains, the sound of cattle and horses and of course the guns a blazing. I want to thank the current actors like Tom Selleck, Sam Elliott, Sam Shepard, Brad Johnson, Michael Greyeyes, Wilford Brimley and many more for helping to keep the Western alive.

We do need more westerns. But please don't insult us by filming them in a location that is so different than where the story is supposed to be taking place. Also don't make technical errors about customs and culture. We the viewers aren't stupid one die hard western fan probably knows more about western history than the whole production company will in a life time so don't show your ignorance.

I'm tired of seeing movies with no moral value, tired of everything being f... this and f... that. Let's see more westerns, Kids didn't carry guns to school because of western, they just used there fingers and said "bang" on the playground. Lets see some more Westerns, where we all can tell the good guys from the bad guys, and the good guys live by a code of respect, and dignity. AMEN

American is in a period where it is examining it's character! In the day of good westerns we knew we were the "Good Guys!" We really are longing to get back to a way of life and ideals that assure us once again that we are still the "Good Guys!" Westerns once again where black is black and white is white with heroes that stand for all that is best will greatly aid our rediscovery of "self!"

Finally!!, some one steps forward of some quality to shoot a good picture in TEXAS, Thank you Ron Howard, You should be made an honary Texan!! Canada is killing the film industry in the US and in Texas too!! When the state pays 75% of the production cost like Canada, you cannot blaim the Hollyweird bunch to trip over themselves to go up there to make their movies- America, wake up!!!! Pitts off!!

IT IS OUR HERITAGE, WE LOVE IT, WE NEED IT. EVERY CHILD WANTS TO BE A COWBOY OR COWGIRL AT SOMETIME AND EVEN THOUGH THEY DON'T TURN OUT TO BE ONE, DEEP IN THEIR HEARTS, THEY ARE ONE. LET'S KEEP THIS DREAM ALIVE WITH A REFOCUSED AND REVIVED WESTERN MOVIE EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE. HECK, I WATCH LONESOME DOVE AT LEAST 5 TIMES A YEAR!

Today perhaps more than ever we need positive ideas presented to our youth. Ideas that we as Americans don't compromise. The role models of today are not the kind of individuals that I had when growing up. Let us as Americans not discolor the fact that right is STILL right and WRONG is still wrong and there are not any grey areas. I hope and pray that I live long enough to see this type of movie and tv programming come back. Then and only then will I feel comfortable that America has turned the corner to a brighter future. Thank you.

I am an MPAA Accredited film reviewer. I hardly ever see new Westerns, let alone good ones. I would like to see more Westerns along the lines of Tombstone, which, regardless of genre, is one of my favorite movies of all time.

The settling of the West is part of our Great Heritage. In this day and age we need to get back to the basics and what our Great Country is all about. Our children need to know about their heritage.

Is there any man amongst us who didn't revel in the grandeur and heroism found only in the great Westerns when he was a boy? And believe me, the ladies love them, too! Please bring these classic stories back. Instead of the gangsterism or sex-drenched offerings being peddled to today's kids, why not help them find their way into adulthood with the great values that were delivered in the classic Western films?

We need some truly new and younger Western Actors to take up where Wayne, Selleck, Johnson, Eastwood, Elliott, and the rest left off. L'Amour has hundreds of good stories as do many of todays western writers. SASS is numbering in the thousands in all fifty states and many foreign countries. The wild west is alive and well and you'd best git with it. Ya snooze ya loose.
