The skies were clear that October day,
Bout nine-thirty in the mornin they came ridin my way,
Five of them, heavily armed, I noticed as they rode by,
Out of the ordinary they were, something just didnt seem right.
In a little while, gunfire was all about,
"Somethings happening at the bank!" I heard someone shout,
Citizens were running in different directions everywhere,
So I headed for the commotion at the Town Square.
In fifteen minutes time the deed was done,
The riders I had seen lay dead, save one,
For they had attempted to rob our two banks, you see,
The Dalton brothers it was, and two others unknown to me.
Our loss was not riches that October day,
Twas four fine citizens, I regret to say,
Marshal Charles T. Connelly, Charles Brown,
Lucius M. Baldwin, and George B. Cubine,
Our defenders, like flowers in bloom, plucked from the vine.
