AFI Tips Hat to Cowboy Heroes By Taylor Fogarty
In the sixth installment of the American Film Institute's (AFI) centennial celebration of American cinema, which aired on June 3rd on CBS, the institute announced its list of 100 YEARS&100 HEROES & VILLAINS. The film characters were chosen from 400 nominees on ballots sent to 1,500 actors, directors, critics and others in the movie business.
The fictional cowboy honorees who made the HEROES list and thus are credited with leaving a legacy and making a cultural impact on American society include HIGH NOON's Will Kane (Gary Cooper), leading the pack in the number five spot.
Other classic complex cowboy-idols that made the grade are:
# 16. Shane (Alan Ladd) in SHANE
# 20. Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid (Paul Newman and Robert Redford) in BUTCH CASSIDY & THE SUNDANCE KID
# 36. Rooster Cogburn (John Wayne) in TRUE GRIT
Interestingly, out of all the oaters made over the last one hundred years, not one western bad-guy made it to infamy on the VILLAINS list.
Of course, for those who subscribe to the belief that STAR WARS is really a Western, the only exception in this case then would be the intergalactic meanie Darth Vader, who ranked as #3 all-time villain.
...But, then too, in the same vein if 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY were ever to be looked upon as a modernistic pioneer story, then perhaps Darth will be happy to know that the murderous computer HAL 9000 was also among the most villainous of film characters, ranking, perhaps somewhat ominously, at #13 on the list.
