A modern cowboy's life is not an easy one
The daylight always fades before the work is done.
No rain, no grass, no winter feed
It's hard for this old heart to beat the banker's greed.
By God, though, that river valley's beauty could make an angel blush
And with a few inches of rain, it could again be green and lush.
We could fill that pasture with Herefords and maybe a Charolais or two
Enough to make a full day's work for our family branding crew.
Yes Lord, this cowboy's life has not been filled with ease
But when I think of all you've given me, I fall and hit my knees.
The sight of that old mama cow, so proud of her new calf,
Watching my little girls saddle up that pony, and listening to them laugh,
Seeing that bale of hay glistening in the morning dew.
I may not smile that much, but God, I sure thank you.
And if I had another choice to make way back then,
I would happily decide on this cowboy's life again.
