They sat around the table,
Eyes were staring at their hand.
Hoping Lady Luck would smile,
Upon the colors that were fanned.
One man sat with thoughts of riches,
A cowboy played to win a wife.
A miner gambled with his future,
The last was in cuz thats his life.
In the corner was an old clock,
A brass pendulum it swung.
As nerves were frayed and throats went dry,
And lives in the balance hung.
A card was flipped out slowly,
To the man who asked for "One".
Two wiped at sweat that gathered,
The last ones fingers tapped his gun.
Silver coins moved towards the middle,
As the stakes were raised once more.
The miner folded from the pressure,
And lost his claim to dig for ore.
kTwo sets of eyes locked on each other,
The third pair shifted back and forth.
He had to quit the game soon after,
His riches south, his debt grown north.
Now just two were left to gamble,
As the large saloon went still.
A crowd was deep around the table,
Gathered in to watch the thrill.
A loud gasp was made a sudden,
When the cards were played at last.
The cowboy won the stake with Aces,
The cardsharp saw his time had passed.
As he swept up all his winnings,
The cowpoke voiced his dreams aloud.
"Ive won enough to buy my own ranch,
And make my woman mighty proud.
Now shell marry me for certain",
And he thanked the Lord above.
Those gathered there all learned this lesson,
Dont bet against a man whos playing for love.
