"The Indian Wars in Stephen F. Austin's Texas Colony, 1822-1835" was awarded one of the 2001 Presidio La Bahia Awards by the Sons of the Republic of Texas for outstanding contribution in the field of the Spanish Colonial Period of Texas history.
Presented for the first time, this is the story of the organization, campaigns undertaken, along with the leadership, tactics and strategy employed by the militia in Stephen F. Austin's land grand colony against hostile Indians and others, from 1822 to 1835. It is a story central to the survival and eventual success of his colony in remote Mexican Texas. No other institution can claim this distinction and only Austin's good fortune and luck as beneficiary of a generally exceptional assemblage of original settlers, "The Old Three Hundred," can rival the militia for its contribution to the success of the colony.
As part of this study, the book examines the primary sources dealing with the allegation that the first "Texas Rangers" were formed in 1823 by Stephen F. Austin. This claim, however, is not backed-up by the evidence.
"Allen Hatley's The Indian Wars bridges a gap between legend and fact on the encounters of early Texas settlers and the Indians already living in the region. He also dispels the notion that Stephen F. Austin was the lone founder of the Texas Rangers."Brian P. King, Nacogdoches, Texas
